If you didn’t know yet, I love love baking sweets and goodies! And one of them is meringues. Meringues are made of egg whites and sugar. After making a whole batch of them I have so many egg yolks left and it would be a complete waste to just throw them out, right? Because who likes waste? Haha! Not me. So I go ahead and make Leche Flan (It’s Pinoy style Crème Brulee) out of them egg yolks. Then when I do clean up on my kitchen chaos, I see all of them egg shells. Lots of egg shells. What am I gonna do with those egg shells? I think they are a pretty white canvas on their own if I may say!
In the spirit of creativity and resourcefulness I thought of incorporating them egg shells in today’s project. Are you ready? We’re going to do an egg shell mosaic! It’s quite easy, simple and fun!
Here is what you’ll need:
- Mommy Lhey’s Digital Stamp of your choice. I chose the exclusive unicorn digital stamp in the Little Bits April Kit.
- Egg Shells (Lots of them)
- Paper Cutter
- White Glue
- Sealer (like Mod Podge)
- Picture Frame (Not really required because you can totally use your finished project as a planner dashboard or incorporate it to your mood board, etc.)
So, let’s start!
Start by cleaning your egg shells by washing them with water to get rid of the sticky leftovers of the egg whites, make sure to get rid of those white paper fibres inside the shell too so you can crush them easily. For this project I think I was only able to use a total of 3-4 whole egg shells. After cleaning, crush them to tiny puzzle like pieces. (Note: I made the mistake of crushing them using my plastic gloved fingers (it hurts! Haha!) because I think I would get the tiny sizes that I like if I do my own crushing, but you can totally use a mortar and pestle or even the bottom end of a glass bottle to crush them egg shells to bits.)
Print your chosen digital stamp on cardstock paper. Trim your paper to the size of your liking. For this project, I trimmed it to fit the size of my frame. I also lined the corners of my image using a pencil. This is to help me decorate the background of my image later on.
Let’s start working on our image by applying glue in one section. Make sure that the section is covered amply with glue. Sprinkle you crushed egg shells on it and gently press to make sure they stick well together. Tap any excess egg shells off. Let dry for 5 minutes then colour your glued egg shells using your markers. Repeat section after section until you have covered the entire image.
I thought of incorporating clouds in the background to accentuate my unicorn. I drew a cloud on a cardstock and cut it to be used as a template. I used a dauber as a blending tool to mix pastel blue and sky blue coloured ink to form my clouds.
I sealed my mosaicked unicorn with Mod Podge to prevent the egg shells from falling off and to give it a nice sheen. Once dry, I placed it inside my frame and voila! Here’s my finished art work!
You may choose to make this into a dashboard or a post card or a greeting card. It’s you choice! There are so many possibilities! I hope you liked it as much as I enjoyed making it! Thank you for taking your time to read and I hope to see your amazing Mommy Lhey projects too! Until next time!
